Student Mentor: Volunteer (5) opening
-Participants are people who experience disabilities in a variety of ways (emotional, physical, cognitive, behavioral) and seek a mentor to guide them through home and community places. Mentors share experience, knowledge, talents, interests and abilities and work one-on-one with a person to provide the supports necessary to meet specific needs and accomplish individualized goals. A mentor must be able to provide these supports with the utmost dignity and respect, no matter the task, at all times and must be able to ensure the safety, privacy and confidence of each person/family. Most importantly, a mentor must have the ability and talents to create innovative supports while providing motivation, guidance, and opportunity in all endeavors. SNAP mentors will be expected to advocate, explore, and remain kind and optimistic throughout considerable challenges.
REQUIRED: * High School Diploma
* Be dependable, punctual, prepared, and safe
* Be able to read files, complete daily/monthly narratives, and time sheets and deliver on time.
* Be able to transport a person in a safe and reliable automobile
* Valid driver's license, social security card and car insurance
PREFERRED: Being knowledgeable about what our community has to offer is preferred. Our community has lots to do in a variety of urban and rural settings. Mentors may encourage interaction with people, participation in parades or disability advocacy rallies, visiting council members, viewing or attending council meetings in person. A mentor may also provide expressive arts and athletic supports. Creativity and innovation for finding ways to accommodate a person's real needs. Experience working with individuals considered to have disabilities is preferred, but not required.

* Experience in assessing student skills and knowledge in reading and writing, using a variety of formal and informal assessment tools;
* Ability to assist in the analysis of school-wide literacy strengths and weaknesses and formulate plans to improve student achievement in reading and teaching effectiveness;
* Knowledge of successful techniques in classroom management and instructional planning for effective literacy instruction;
* Ability to serve as a school- and network-wide resource;
* Deep understanding of evidence-based reading research and practices for teaching reading and assessing student progress toward achievement of benchmarks as documented in coursework and/or experience as a teacher of reading;
* Knowledge of effective literacy instructional strategies, assessment tools and research based "best practices" in early literacy, adolescent literacy, and/or content literacy as necessary to the particular position
* Experience teaching reading to students in individual and small groups
* Interpersonal skills (communication, problem solving, conflict management, collaboration) to share research based instructional approaches with teachers and administrators and provide advice, mentoring and coaching;
* Strong organizational skills.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
* 5+ years elementary/secondary urban classroom experience;
* 2+ years as a reading specialist, literacy coach or related position;
* Reading Specialist credentials preferred (e.g. certification, etc.)

* Proven success increasing student reading and literacy achievement
